Samantha Marley (University of Western Australia)

This lecture provides an introduction to the phenomenon of re-recordings, exploring the reasons and methods by which artists revisit their earlier recorded works. We will discuss the theoretical foundations of re-recordings, including definitions, legal aspects, and artistic motivations, before examining three specific case studies (John Prine, Squeeze, and Taylor Swift) to discuss the practice in more detail. The session will also address the broader implications of re-recordings, particularly their intersection with ideas surrounding authenticity, nostalgia, and authorship in popular music.
