Stefan Benz (Univerity of Bonn) “Straight Outta Regina – Indigenous Hip-Hop in Canada” (C40.606)
Counter to mainstream narratives, Indigenous artists have been shaping hip-hop culture from its inception. As a creative platform used to amplify marginalized voices, hip-hop has allowed Indigenous artists to express the political, social, and cultural concerns of their communities. They have used it to protest and resist settler colonial oppression and to negotiate Indigenous political and cultural sovereignty. This talk introduces the work of contemporary First Nations rappers Drezus (Plains Cree), JB The First Lady (Nuxalk / Onondaga), and T-Rhyme (Dene / Cree), whose music gives voice to Indigenous experiences in the Canadian city and beyond.
