Lehrveranstaltungen

IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ BEFORE REGISTERING!

DUE TO UNCERTAINTIES IN FUNDING, THIS COURSE WILL BE EITHER OFFERED AS A BLENDED INTENSIVE PROGRAMME (INCLUDING A MOBILITY WEEK TO LEÒN IN THE FIRST WEEK OF DECEMBER; FUNDED BY ERASMUS+) OR A VIRTUAL EXCHANGE.

This class will be very demanding as you need to work together with students from other universities and - if funding is approved - might travel to León to work on campus for a week, additionally to the course work.

IF this course will be offered as an ERASMUS+Blended Intensive Programme it will combine 1) online lectures, 2) international online collaboration in working groups between student teachers from across Europe and 3) a one-week period at the University of León, Spain, which will include the completion of project work and other events (potentially first week of December).

This seminar is dedicated to exploring innovative practices in foreign language teaching while promoting intercultural exchange and research-based learning. Participants will investigate new developments in language teaching and critically reflect on teaching traditions in their countries, exchanging experiences with peers from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Through online lectures, discussions, and readings, participants will delve into key issues related to innovation in foreign language teaching. They will engage in discussions with student teachers from different European countries to explore innovative practices in language education. Additionally, participants will develop classroom activities and learning materials based on the course themes.

The seminar focuses on research methods relevant to investigating innovation in language education, including qualitative research, interview-based methods, design-based research, and action research. Participants will develop, implement, and research their teaching concepts and innovative practices in language education exploring the conditions, characteristics, and implementation of innovative teaching methods. The development of research projects will serve as a framework for this exploration.

Exemplary Research Questions:
• What are the key challenges and opportunities in implementing innovative language teaching methods in diverse educational settings?
• How are innovative language teaching practices perceived in different cultural contexts?
Possible Research Methods:
• Surveys or interviews with language teachers and learners
• Analysis of classroom interactions
• Observational studies of language teaching practices

Since the publication of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment and its adaptation to the Bildungsstandards, language teachers have started to reconsider task orientated approaches and the role of the four skills as well as of mediation in the EFL classroom. In this seminar we will look at definitions of communicative and linguistic competence (competence models like the CEF) and then focus on assessment procedures as used in VERA 8 (Vergleichsarbeiten 8. Klasse) and other standardised tests of proficiency. The focus will be on both receptive and productive skills. We will also look at educational and political consequences of standard setting and centralised testing and portfolio assessment. Students will be introduced to methods of competence-oriented language teaching.
