Abstract
Why are scholars and practitioners increasingly drawing on the concept of “digital” rather than the well-established “IT”? The fact that this digital “x” trend (where “x” can be innovation, strategy, transformation, etc.) is increasing in vigor in both scientific and practitioner circles suggests that this is not hype. Rather, it signals a fundamental shift in how we think about and work with technology in organizations. To understand and explain this shift, we juxtapose extant literature with an in-depth longitudinal investigation of how three case companies organize around the notion of digital and IT. Drawing on the theoretical lens of organizing logic for our analysis, we provide a conceptual delineation of how the organizing logic of digital differs from that of IT. Further, we explore why the organizing logic of IT may not be sufficient, thus necessitating the emergence of the organizing logic of digital. This exploration leads us to question if there is more value in unpacking the relationship between digital and IT rather than highlighting their differences. The talk aims to present our preliminary findings and hopes to spark some dialogue on these issues that are pertinent to our discipline.
