With the globalisation of trade and travel, many species have been enabled in conquering natural boundaries with some regionally restricted species becoming successfully established outside their natural ranges. These species (plants, animals, fungi) are declared as alien species outside their native range. Numerous introduced species have become invasive, which not only affects ecosystem functioning but can also have negative economic consequences and effects on human health. Being placed far outside their natural range, the introduction of alien invasive species represents an unintentional anthropological experiment, enabling evolutionary and biogeographical processes to take place over grand scales.
Based on this man-made global experiment this seminar will explore methods on research design and the presentation of research results from different perspectives (ecological, social, economical).

This seminar will deepen your understanding from the "Introduction to Spatial Sciences" on how the past and present climate shapes geology, biomes and land use. We will explore the effects of and on climate on different temporal and spatial scales. Furthermore, we will discuss the direct and indirect effects of anthropogenic climate change as well as mitigation and adaptation measures. This course combines lecture-style teaching and discussions with short video sequences and exercises to apply the new knowledge. We use Moodle as our learning platform. See "Seminarplan" for further information.
There are lectures on climate change and there are lectures that provide an introduction to climate. This seminar does both and shows how these things are connected.

The students begin to familiarize themselves with the strand-specific case (i.e., context, structures and processes, historical development), and explore possible joint research objects (Part A of the Transdisciplinary Research Process).
This project "Climate change in the city" is located in Lüneburg. It is based on the climate adaptation concept of the city of Lüneburg (link above). Master students from the cohorts of 2024 and 2025 already participated in this project and co-developed solutions with a diverse group of stakeholders. So far, group projects focussed on heat adaptation measures, sustainable urban mobility, green spaces and biodiversity, as well as, solutions to bridge the knowledge-action-gap. This year we will focus again on the blue-green infrastructure of Lüneburg in the light of climate change and climate adaptation measures. We will have a special focus on the Ilmenau river and on carriers and barriers for sustainability solutions. Each summer semester students organise a joint off-campus workshop across all group projects co-creating or evaluating their solutions with stakeholders. Some solutions are already successfully implemented in Lüneburg.

We will explore the complexity of natural and urban environments and the anthropogenic drivers shaping them using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This course provides an introduction to the spatial analysis of complex systems using Google Earth Pro and QGIS and is designed for students without prior experience in spatial analysis. The course covers topics such as habitat connectivity, blue-green infrastructure, and climate mitigation.
