Happy Pride Month 2021

Joint statement by AStA, Equal Opportunities Office, Presidential Board and QuARG

2021-06-25 Pride has been celebrated in June for decades all over the world. Thanks to queer activists who paved the way, a lot has happened since the Stonewall Uprising 52 years ago - from the decriminalisation of sexual orientation and gender identity to the increased positive representation of the LGTBQIA+ community in popular media. However, there is still a long way to go to make life safe for all and to address existing injustices. The annual Pride Month is a reminder to never tolerate exclusion and discrimination and to always engage in solidarity for all. As 'Pride' already emphasises, pride and love for oneself and our fellow human beings should be strengthened and a future full of respect and acceptance - of course also outside of Pride Month - should be our aspiration.

Leuphana University Lüneburg promotes equality and equal treatment of all bisexual, lesbian, gay, queer, trans*, inter* and non-binary persons and a reduction of discrimination and hostility.

"Leuphana University Lüneburg is committed to the goal of creating good learning, working, and research conditions for society as a whole in the sense of a gender- and diversity-responsive and appreciative university culture. It is committed to liberality, equal treatment and respect. The goal of emphasising equality and inclusion, also with regard to gender diversity, is a high priority for Leuphana. Everyone at Leuphana shall be able to profess their identity without having to fear negative reactions or discrimination." - Sascha Spoun, President, Leuphana University Lüneburg

"It is the goal of the student body to shape an open, tolerant and diverse university space. We still have a long way to go until we reach that goal. We perceive the university to be a safe space and as AStA we want to continue to work hard to address existing problems. We want all people - regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity - to feel comfortable at our university!" - QuARG and AStA, Leuphana University Lüneburg

"Showing our colours for gender diversity and an active reduction of discrimination are not only important during Pride Month, but represent an everyday task and a joint responsibility of the university and civil society."  - Equal Opportunities Office, Leuphana University Lüneburg
