Leuphana represented in ShanghaiRanking for the first time

2020-12-18 Lüneburg/Shanghai. According to UNESCO, there are just under 20,000 officially accredited or recognized higher education institutions worldwide. More than 4,000 of them were evaluated for the current ShanghaiRanking, and around 2,000 were finally included in the ranking. The 1,000 best universities in the world are published each year by ShanghaiRanking. For the first time, Leuphana University Lüneburg has now been able to establish itself in this circle as one of 49 German universities.

The 2020 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) is published by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, an independent higher education information organization that is not legally answerable to any university or government agency. Since 2003, the ARWU has annually presented the world's top universities based on a transparent methodology and objective third-party data. It was one of the first global university rankings and is considered one of two leading university rankings, along with the Times Higher Education Ranking (THE).

The top three places in the ranking are held by the universities of Harvard, Stanford and Cambridge. The best-placed German university is Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München in 51st place. Leuphana initially ranks at the back of the field. In view of its young history and the fact that it is one of the smaller universities, Leuphana nevertheless considers its first-time inclusion in the global list of best universities a great success.

In individual subjects, Leuphana achieved good to very good rankings in the Shanghai Ranking: In Environmental Science and Engineering, the university is ranked 201-300 worldwide or 10th in Germany; in Ecology, 201-300 worldwide or 18th in Germany; in Business Administration, 301-400 worldwide or 15th in Germany; in Education, 301-400 worldwide or 17th in Germany; in Management, 401-500 worldwide or 21st in Germany; and in Psychology, 401-500 worldwide or 30th in Germany.

Universities that have a Nobel Prize winner, Fields Medal winner, highly cited researchers, or papers published in Nature or Science are considered for the ranking. In addition, universities with a significant number of articles indexed in the Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCIE) and Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) are included.
