Leuphana-Opening Week 2022: TURNING POINTS

Social progress in times of crisis?

2022-10-05 Lüneburg. On 6 October, around 1,300 young people start their Bachelor's degree at Leuphana University Lüneburg. During the traditional start week , the students are invited to venture an initial analysis of the various crisis phenomena in times of uncertainty and warlike violence in Europe and to identify the potential for action in the present and future.

In 84 project groups, the students will deal with the big questions of war and peace, the future of democracy, artificial intelligence and social justice. Renowned guests from politics, science and social practice will support the students as guest speakers and sources of inspiration. The starting week will be opened by the value change researcher and Leuphana professor Christian Welzel in Leuphana's Libeskind Auditorium. "After a pandemic of more than two years, we can finally welcome the first-semester students back to the large auditorium - without getting careless, of course," says College Director Dr. Steffi Hobuß.

Guest speakers at the launch week include Google's head of Central Europe, Philipp Justus, the director of the German Institute of Development and Sustainability, Anna-Katharina Hornidge, the former parliamentary state secretary and Telekom manager Thomas Sattelberger, the writer Viktor Jerofejew and the security researcher and civic tech activist Lilith Wittmann.

The urban community is also welcome to the launch week. On Monday, 10 October, at 7:15 pm in the Forum of the Central Building, the question is what makes the city resilient. Sustainability researcher Daniel Lang and Anne Purschwitz from the project office want to explore together with students and residents of Lüneburg how the "city of the future" proves itself in times of crisis. They will be joined by climate scientist Markus Groth, retailer Antje Blumenbach, the head of the sustainability department of the Hanseatic City of Lüneburg, Carl-Ernst Müller, and climate protection manager Karina Hellmann.
