“To Boßel or not to Boßel”: tournament premiere

2025-05-20

A total of eight teams competed in the traditional North German game, which involves throwing a boßelkugel (a type of ball) into a target with as few throws as possible. Nearly 60 LSMT students set off in style with boßelwagen (boßel carts) and plenty of motivation to conquer the Hasenburger Forest on a circular course of about four kilometres.

It may have been pure luck or phenomenal skill that the team ‘AIX & ML3’ from the Institute for Business Informatics, led by Prof. Ricardo Usbeck, won the race ahead of the engineers and their team ‘C12-Rollcontroll’ and the team from the industrial engineering student council ‘WiIngs’, both of which slipped into second place with just one throw more. (One might well ask oneself to what extent artificial intelligence is already showing everyone how things are done :-))

With creative team names, pure girl power and great enthusiasm, the team led by Prof. Olga Abramova under the name ‘Die Wurfgranaten’ (The Throwing Grenades) and the team ‘Keep it rolling’ led by Prof. Elke Schüßler and Prof. Franziska Kößler also made it to the finish line. The mixed team ‘IMAFIA’ led by Prof. Schröder, the ‘Mindset Masters’ with Prof. Oliver Genschow and the challenger team from the Dean's Office, ‘DMT Dynamite,’ also made the balls bounce.

After about three hours in beautiful weather, everyone headed to the restaurant ‘Bobbys Fairplay,’ where the winner's trophy was ceremoniously presented to the representatives of the ‘AIX& ML3’ team. A dinner together rounded off the great afternoon.

Organiser Dagmar Brünschwitz from the Dean's Office summed it up happily:

“I was surprised by the positive response and was delighted that so many colleagues were keen to take part in this event. It was a colourful mix of people from all institutes and status groups, and I found the interaction between everyone great and refreshing. We got to know new colleagues and gained new inspiration. I'm looking forward to next year when the challenge cup goes on its travels again!”

It's going to be exciting. For the rest of the year, the cup has found a nice place in the information system’s office. But next year, at the school's second „Boßel” event, we'll see who gets to call the cup his or her own.
