Leuphana seeks model schools for language promotion project

2024-05-24 Lüneburg. If teachers and principals take a look around their elementary school, they are likely to discover clear development potential in some children with regard to their language and social-emotional skills. A team from Leuphana University Lüneburg is now offering three all-day elementary schools from Lüneburg and the surrounding area the opportunity to become model schools as part of the Fühlen Denken Sprechen in der Grundschule (FDS-G) project.

The status of a model school is attractive: all teachers and afternoon staff in the second grade (and other interested colleagues) receive free and practice-oriented training on content-oriented language support around the topic of "emotions", a topic that often burns under the nails of children at the beginning of school. The training course teaches language teaching strategies and how to apply them to the emotional world of children in the classroom and in after-school activities. The researchers want to use surveys to find out whether not only teachers but also children benefit from the training in terms of language and understanding emotions. It starts in September 2024.

FDS-G is an interdisciplinary project by professors of German didactics, education and psychology from the universities of Lüneburg, Kassel and Braunschweig and has been funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research since 2022.
