Leuphana at the "Week of the Environment" in Bellevue Palace Park
2024-05-31 Lüneburg/Berlin. Leuphana University Lüneburg will be represented together with ISC3 at the "Week of the Environment" on June 4 and 5 in the park of Bellevue Palace in Berlin. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) have extended an invitation. The two-day event offers an attractive specialist program, exciting discussions and a large innovation show. Leuphana is presenting itself with a contribution on the topic of "Sustainable chemistry for a sustainable future".
Sustainable chemistry helps to protect the climate, preserve biodiversity and resources and improve life. It is therefore much more than "green chemistry", which is primarily concerned with producing chemicals in a climate and environmentally friendly way. It involves using energy and raw materials efficiently and sparingly and also replacing hazardous substances with less toxic ones that are easier to break down in the environment.
However, this alone does not make chemistry sustainable: in future, more fundamental answers will be needed to the question of whether chemicals are needed at all for this or that purpose. For sustainable solutions, social and ethical aspects must also be taken into account and all stakeholders along the life cycle of products and services must be involved.
Prof. Dr. Klaus Kümmerer (Leuphana University Lüneburg and ISC3 - International Sustainable Chemistry Collaborative Center), Prof. Dr. Henning Friege (N³ Nachhaltigkeitsberatung and honorary professor at Leuphana) and Dr. Stefanie Wieck (Federal Environment Agency) will use a number of examples to show how sustainable chemistry works and is effective. The event will take place on June 5 at 3 p.m. in forum tent 6.
A total of around 190 exhibitors will present their innovations and solutions for greater environmental protection at the Federal President's official residence during Environment Week 2024. A high-caliber jury from the worlds of society, business and science has reviewed around 400 applications in a nationwide competition. The innovation show is dedicated to current aspects of climate, environmental and species protection.
