Tragic accident involving Leuphana students during an exchange programme

The university is deeply saddened by this tragedy and extends its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased students, also on behalf of all members of the university. At the same time, our thoughts and wishes for a speedy recovery are with the two injured students at Leuphana.

The three students of Business Informatics and Psychology were sharing an apartment during their exchange visits to two Turkish universities (Üsküdar University and Marmara University) in Istanbul, which, according to current information, they had rented themselves. According to unconfirmed findings, the students suffered poisoning that may have been caused by work on or in the water pipes of the shared apartment. The exact cause of the accident is still being investigated by the Turkish authorities.

The other Leuphana students currently in Istanbul on exchange programmes were informed immediately by the International Center. Our university facilities and staff are, of course, available to support those affected. Leuphana is also in close contact with the Turkish host universities, whom we would like to thank explicitly for their extremely cooperative and committed approach in dealing with this tragic accident.

Our condolences go out to the parents, families and friends of the deceased student.
