Vita

In April 2026, Marina Martinez Mateo (*1986 in Barcelona, Spain) was appointed Professor of Philosophy of the Contemporary at the Institute of Philosophy and Art History (IPK) at Leuphana University Lüneburg. From 2006 to 2012, she studied philosophy and political science in Jena, Frankfurt am Main, and Santiago de Chile. From 2013 to 2016, she conducted her PhD in philosophy at the Cluster of Excellence “The Formation of Normative Orders”, Goethe University Frankfurt. Her dissertation was published in 2018 under the title Politik der Repräsentation. Zwischen Formierung und Abbildung (The Politics of Representation: Between Formation and Depiction). From 2016 to 2021, she worked as research associate at the Chair of Practical Philosophy at Goethe University Frankfurt. From 2021 to 2026, she was a junior professor of philosophy of media and technology at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich. In 2022/23, she was a Visiting Scholar at Northwestern University, Evanston, on a Feodor Lynen Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. From 2019 to 2025, she was a member of the DFG-funded research network “Cultures of Aesthetic Resistance.”

 

Since 2024, Marina Martinez Mateo has been a member of the Research Council of the Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt (IfS) and, in this capacity, has served as co-editor of the Institute’s book series (Campus). She is also a member of the editorial board of Zeitschrift für Ideengeschichte (Beck). In 2022, she founded the working group “Philosophy and Diversity” of the German Society for Philosophy (DGPhil) and has served as its co-spokesperson ever since

Research Interests

Marina Martinez Mateo’s research and teaching focus on questions of identity and universalism; the ambivalences of care; on inheritance and reproduction; representation and advocacy; right-wing violence and the politics of memory; racism and antisemitism; the Enlightenment and the concept of “race.” Her key points of reference include feminist philosophy, Critical Philosophy of Race, Critical Theory, contemporary French philosophy, and Hegelian philosophy.
