Institute of Political Science in Lower Saxony in the lead

2024-11-08 In the current Shanghai Ranking (2023), the Institute of Political Science at Leuphana (IPW) is once again listed among the top 200-300 political science departments worldwide and in 13th place among all German political science departments. This result is remarkable, especially in view of the larger faculties with which the institute competes (e.g. FU Berlin, Humboldt Berlin, LMU Munich, Frankfurt, Mannheim, Cologne, Bremen and Hamburg).

Among political science departments in Lower Saxony, the IPW even ranks first (followed by Oldenburg, Osnabrück and Göttingen). The institute also plays a leading role in collecting and providing data sets such as the World Value Survey or the Comparative Political Data Set, which are used by other researchers worldwide for their research.

The Shanghai Ranking covers more than 1,900 out of 5,000 universities in 104 countries. It uses a range of objective academic indicators and third-party data to measure the performance of universities worldwide in their respective subjects, including research output, research influence, international cooperation, research quality and international awards.

‘Our institute brings together researchers who have previously worked in very different places in Germany and Europe: at the EUI in Florence, in Gothenburg in Sweden, at the LSE in London or at the Charles University in Prague, to name just a few,’ says the director of the institute, Prof. Dr. Sarah Engler, ’these different perspectives create an inspiring and cooperative environment for research into democracies. I would like to thank all members of the IPW and look forward to sharing new insights from ongoing projects such as the ERC project ‘The Whiteness of Wealth Management’ and the many other projects at the institute in the future.’
