Since 2010, Klaus Kümmerer has headed the Leuphana Institute for Sustainable Chemistry.

Klaus Kümmerer, Professor of Sustainable Chemistry and Material Resources, is now one of the twelve members of the expert team of the newly founded Sustainability Commission of the German Chemical Society (GDCh). Since 2010, he has headed the Leuphana Institute for Sustainable Chemistry and conducted research on sustainability issues in the context of chemistry. The institute's goal is to conduct research and teach environmental chemistry and sustainable chemistry, as well as to develop appropriate solutions. He also combines these disciplines outside Leuphana in his role as Director of Research and Education at the International Sustainable Chemistry Collaboration Centre (ISC3).

By establishing this specialised commission, the German Chemical Society aims to systematically implement sustainability issues across its internal structures, covering all areas of chemistry. The society has long since agreed on its own sustainability agenda (GDCh Sustainability Strategy 2030), which will also be promoted by the new commission. The new team of experts, which will work closely with the GDCh Presidium, aims not only to emphasise sustainability in chemistry and its nationwide society, but also to promote the possibilities of sustainability through chemistry.

The sustainability strategy will be presented for the first time at a GDCh event, the Science Forum Chemistry (SFC) on 29 September in Karlsruhe.
