International master's programs in sustainable chemistry start again

2025-12-04 Lüneburg. Starting in March 2026, Leuphana Professional School will once again offer two English-language, part-time master's programs that qualify specialists and managers for the transformation of the chemical industry: the Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Sustainable Chemistry and the Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Sustainable Chemistry Management. Both programs impart scientifically sound and practice-oriented knowledge for designing sustainable chemical processes and products. Graduates can pursue a variety of career paths—in research and industry as well as in government agencies, associations, or NGOs.

The M.Sc. Sustainable Chemistry is aimed in particular at graduates of natural science subjects such as chemistry, pharmacy, or biochemistry who wish to expand their technical expertise with sustainability skills. The focus is on the environmentally friendly development of chemical substances, issues of toxicology, resource management, and substance assessment. The program has been recognized by the United Nations as SDG Good Practice—a special recognition for its role in training professionals who work at the interface of science and sustainability.

The MBA Sustainable Chemistry Management, on the other hand, is aimed at specialists and managers from industry, administration, and consulting who want to strategically integrate sustainability into decision-making and innovation processes. The FIBAA-accredited master's program combines management knowledge with chemical-technical fundamentals and teaches skills for the development of sustainable business models and regulatory strategies in order to train managers at all levels of decision-making for a sustainable chemical industry.

Both programs are headed by Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Dr. h.c. Klaus Kümmerer, Professor of Sustainable Chemistry at Leuphana University Lüneburg and Director of the Institute for Sustainable Chemistry (INSC). He is internationally recognized as a pioneer in sustainable chemistry and was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 2024. “Sustainable chemistry means exploiting opportunities for new business, from the molecule to the management decision, and living up to our responsibility for future generations. Our programs impart the knowledge necessary to make chemical innovations truly sustainable,” emphasizes Prof. Kümmerer.

Both programs will start in the summer semester of 2026. The application deadline is December 10, 2025.
