TU Hamburg and Leuphana Expand Their Collaboration

Working Meeting of the Executive Boards on the Campus of the Technical University of Hamburg

2026-09-04 The major transformative processes of our time require the interplay of diverse scientific perspectives and expertise. The collaboration between TU Hamburg and Leuphana University Lüneburg brings these together in a way that is internationally competitive and creates a strong foundation for jointly driving new initiatives in education, research, and innovation—particularly through and with artificial intelligence.

Further Building on Complementary Strengths: Teams from TU Hamburg and Leuphana at the joint executive committee meeting.

At a joint meeting of the executive boards on the campus of the Technical University of Hamburg, both universities further developed their existing collaboration and agreed on new joint initiatives in the areas of academic studies, artificial intelligence, and continuing education. The goal is to integrate the institutions’ respective strengths even more closely and leverage them for the development of the Hamburg metropolitan region.

An important milestone in this collaboration is the joint project “Impact Engineering for a Sustainable World.” In the summer of 2026, Leuphana and the Hamburg University of Technology secured joint funding of approximately 3.5 million euros for this project from the Foundation for Innovation in Higher Education. The funding supports the strategic development of joint programs in academic studies and teaching. The focus is on developing a joint, English-language pilot bachelor’s degree program that combines the development of technological solutions with social design competence. At the recent meeting on the TUHH campus, the universities built on the results achieved so far and planned the next concrete steps for developing the pilot program.

Through their strategic collaboration, TU Hamburg and Leuphana aim to further build on their complementary strengths and contribute to strengthening the Hamburg metropolitan region as an internationally recognized hub for science and innovation. Together, they seek to combine academic perspectives and develop new approaches to actively shape the digital and sustainable transformation.
