For SEBS and SGL students: Restoration, conservation, social-ecological management and governance of the Island of Hiddensee

The students begin to familiarize themselves with the strand-specific case (i.e., context, structures and processes, historical development), and explore possible joint research objects (Part A of the Transdisciplinary Research Process).

Some information on Hiddensee: It is a microcosm of the situation in Germany in relation to topics of nature conservation and ecological restoration in a social-ecological context. It is also a microcosm of Germany politically and legally.

The limited size of the island plus the ease with which one can access a wide variety of different ecological habitats, plus a growing list of local actors with whom we have managed to make contact and build some forms of relationships, makes it very good for a TD course on the interface between conservation and law.

- The overall concept is that students will explore and get to know the wide variety of habitats on the island and the conservation and restoration opportunities and challenges related to these habitats and their legal protection. At the same time, based on certain local actor groups (people involved in conservation, the local primary school kids and teachers, the inhabitants of the fascinating village of Neuendorf, an old fishing village) we develop TD topics either based on previous work from the first cohorts of students and explore new directions in TD on the island.

In order to be able to effectively and meaningfully engage with local actors on these topics, students needs a foundation in the key issues related to conservation and legal protection. For this reason, it is very important for students to work in groups on getting to know their own habitat type (grasslands, forest, heathland and the common of the village of Neuendorf).

Ziel: Students know:

-the basic scientific state of the art related to key topics in conservation and restoration of biodiversity across a wide range of different habitat types- with local legal framings of relevance on the very biodiversity island of Hiddensee

- Students gain knowledge on the key attributes of their chosen habitat, including iconic species and the legal framing of that habitat in general in Germany but also specifically on Hiddensee.

Students are able to:

-formulate ideas for a joint research object related to their case study (one of the key habitats on the island: grassland, forest, coastal heathland and the commons of Neuendorf).

-present and discuss the first research design and interim findings (“work in progress”) in an understandable way.

Sustainable Energy

Inhalt des Seminars im Master-Studiengang Nachhaltigkeitswissenschaften ist das übergreifende Thema des Klimaschutzes und der Energiewende. Behandelt werden Themen wie der diskutierte Kohleausstieg, der Emissionshandel oder der Atomausstieg. Die Themen werden jeweils im Wechsel aus ökonomischer/politischer Sicht (Prof. Kemfert) und aus rechtlicher Perspektive (Prof. Schomerus) behandelt. Dadurch erhalten die Studierenden eine breiter angelegte Sicht auf die diskutierten Fragen.

Die Veranstaltung soll teilweise als Hybrid-Seminar gestaltet werden (Schomerus), teilweise online (Kemfert).

Ziel: Ziel des Seminars ist es, in tiefere Einsichten über die Fragen des Klimaschutzes und der Energiewende zu gewinnen.

Ph. D. Colloquium (Law)

Im Kolloquium stellen Promovierende ihre Forschungsvorhaben vor.

Ziel: Jede*r Promovierende ist aufgefordert, zwei Präsentationen zu halten. Im Idealfall findet die erste Präsentation in einem frühen Stadium der Arbeit an der Dissertation statt und enthält eine Vorstellung der Forschungsfrage und der ins Auge gefassten Herangehensweise.

Gegen Ende der Arbeit an der Dissertation sollte die zweite Präsentation stattfinden; dann entsprechend mit einer kurzen Vorstellung der Ergebnisse.

Transformation 19: The European Union - Policy, Law & Institutions

Die Veranstaltung besteht aus zwei Teilen:

1) Jede Woche werden die Grundlagen der EU Politik, des Rechtssystems und der Institutionen behandelt. Dabei geht es auch um das Verhältnis der EU zu den Mitgliedstaaten, insbesondere Deutschland. Ein Schwerpunkt sind Umwelt- und Energiethemen.

2) Am Ende des Semesters (voraussichtlich im Februar) wird eine Exkursion nach Brüssel angeboten. Wir werden u.a. den Rat, das Parlament und die Kommission besuchen, daneben den Ausschuss der Regionen, das europäische Umweltbüro, etc. Für Brüssel ist ein Aufenthalt von zwei Tagen vorgesehen, zzgl. An- und Abfahrt.

Ziel: Mit der Teilnahme an dem Seminar und der Exkursion werden Sie hre Kenntnisse und das Verständnis für die Arbeit der EU vertiefen, Sie werden lernen wie wichtig z.B. die EU-Gesetzgebung auch für den Alltag in den Mitgliedstaaten ist, und wie Sie sich in europäische politische Prozesse einbringen können.
