Vita

Dr. Alice Bertram joined Leuphana University Lüneburg as a postdoctoral researcher in November 2024. She is part of the interdisciplinary research project “Integrative Mapping and Prioritization of Atlantic Protected Areas” (IMAPP) with Jun.-Prof. Dr. Valentin Schatz. IMAPP focuses on mapping and prioritization of marine protected areas within the framework of the BBNJ agreement (Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction). The position is at the Institute of Sustainability Governance (INSUGO). Dr. Alice Bertram is also a lecturer at the INSUGO.

Previously, Dr. Alice Bertram conducted research in the fields of sociology of law, philosophy of law and constitutional law, in particular as part of her dissertation at the Free University of Berlin. In her work “Zeit als Ressource im Recht” ("Time as a Resource in Law", published in 2024 by Nomos Verlag), she studies how law influences if and how much time individuals have for different purposes and which constitutional limits arguably restrain negative impacts of time as a resource. She develops the approach of understanding time as a fundamental resource to which everyone has an equal claim and which is only limited by external influence. Her research sheds light not only on the legal mechanisms of time allocation, but also on related questions of justice, particularly with regard to autonomy and social participation, and argues for a “temporal subsistence minimum”.

Courses

This course provides an introduction to the concept of law, legal methodology and the role of international, European and national law in achieving a transformation towards more sustainable governance systems. It offers a critical understanding of the structure and functioning of international, European and national law both as an important tool to steer societies towards sustainability and, importantly, also as a constraint to such efforts.

A particular focus of the course is on the interrelationship between the different levels of law as well as key differences between them with respect to actors, law-making, instruments, implementation and enforcement from a global, regional and domestic level. In this respect, the main focus will be on European Union law.

The course approaches these issues through a combination of doctrinal instruction and discussion of selected case-studies. Topics covered include air pollution, emissions trading, supply chain regulation, public participation, climate litigation, and others).

Moreover, depending on availability of suitable guest lecturers, students will simulate an international or European environmental negotiation to experience the challenges and opportunities that such negotiations present first hand.

This course explores how legal and scientific institutions construct and regulate sex and gender. It begins with a fundamental question: What is considered ‘natural’? Who defines what counts as norm and deviation?
Participants will investigate how scientific discourse and legal norms intersect to reinforce—or challenge—binary gender models. In law, binary classifications continue to shape rights and recognition. In science, meanwhile, biological research increasingly reveals the limitations of such binaries—yet these findings are often filtered through social, political, and institutional lenses.
Drawing on feminist legal theory, science studies, and eco-critical perspectives, the course combines conceptual tools with case-based inquiry. Students will examine how both fields contribute to the construction of gendered identities and the regulation of bodies and behaviors.
