FUNDING PROJECT AS PART OF THE LOWER SAXONY FUNDING PROGRAMME INNOVATION BY UNIVERSITIES AND RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS - DEVELOPMENT AND EXPANSION OF INFRASTRUCTURES FOR LEADING RESEARCH

Leuphana University Lüneburg has set itself the goal of expanding its specialisation in the research field of production technology for innovative and sustainable products by setting up a research laboratory. To this end, a laboratory hall is to be converted and an innovative, hybrid machining centre (milling portal combined with laser deposition welding), a universal forming machine with an oven and hydraulic unit, a wire drawing machine, a container for an extrusion press and a computing cluster for executing cutting-edge research projects are purchased and put into operation.

The central theme of the research is ecological and economic sustainability, which is focussed both on the further development of production processes for greater energy efficiency, lightweight construction as well as efficient material systems. This contributes to solving the social challenges of climate change through, for example, progress in the production-related processing of new lightweight materials and the industrial transition to a low-CO2-emission industry.

With the expansion of the infrastructure, research into hybrid processing, in which the more energy-efficient manufacturing processes can be combined, will be expanded. The infrastructure also expands research along process chains. Here, the product properties can be specifically adjusted by controlling the manufacturing processes.
