Opening Event: Starting the New Academic Year with a Highlight
2024-10-15
On Tuesday, 15 October 2024, we had the pleasure of opening the new academic year at the Joachim Herz Doctoral School of Law with exciting lectures by two outstanding researchers.
Professor Dr. Kirsten Schmalenbach (Paris Lodron University Salzburg and currently Fellow at the HIAS - Hamburg Institute for Advanced Studies) presented her latest research project on the rights of nature and gave us a revealing insight into this topic - which is still treated very cautiously in Europe, but is already a legal reality in other parts of the world.
Professor Dr. Louis Kotzé (North-West University) also gave us an insight into his research on 'Planetary Law of the Anthropocene'. While taking a critical look at current international environmental law, he argued for a holistic Earth System Law and better protection of nature and the environment.
In the subsequent discussion - moderated by our fellow Stephanie de Sousa Vieira - we had the opportunity to participate in a fascinating exchange on the topic of international (environmental) law between the two panellists and the audience.
We would like to thank everyone involved for their contribution and the remarkable insights that this event provided. We could not have started the new academic year in a better way.
