Maren Solmecke studied law at Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Germany and Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal, graduating in summer 2023. The focus during her studies was on infrastructure administration and public economic law as well as constitutional law due to her occupation as a student assistant in this field for five years. In 2022/2023 she worked as a lecturer on legal methodology and administrative law for the public administration of the city Essen. Maren currently acts as a research assistant at the chair of Prof. Dr. Alexander Stark (chair for Public Law and Philosophy of Law) at Leuphana University. In 2025, she spent five months as a Visiting Scientist at the United Nations University - Institute for Environment and Human Security in Bonn.

She has been an active part of the climate justice movement for years, engaging in projects on enhancing climate education and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) at schools and universities as well as climate law projects outside academia, including her active membership in Green Legal Impact e.V.

Research Focus

Her research focuses on International Climate Law and the UN Climate Regime. She investigates the growing regime for Loss and Damage under the UNFCCC with a particular emphasis on funding mechanisms for Loss and Damage. In a broader context, she deals with questions of climate justice, such as climate reparations, and critical perspectives on Public International Law.
