Workshop "Legal Research with the Global South" with Prof. Dr. Anél du Plessis
2025-07-08
The Joachim Herz Doctoral School of Law concluded the summer semester 2025 with a workshop on “Legal Research with the Global South.” During the workshop, our guest lecturer, Prof. Dr. Anél du Plessis (Stellenbosch University), focused on methodological issues and the specific characteristics of research on and with the Global South.
From July 8 to 10, 2025, the event took place at Leuphana University, offering participating doctoral students and guests the opportunity to engage with specific research methods and explore the connections between their research projects and the Global South. The workshop addressed the inclusion of multi-perspective approaches and research findings originating from the Global South, rather than merely treating it as a research object.
Professor du Plessis also invited her doctoral students from Stellenbosch and North-West University to participate virtually, providing an opportunity for direct exchange with young researchers from South Africa.
The workshop was extremely informative and inspiring. It conveyed facts, specific methodological knowledge, and personal experiences and insights. The discussion event with Prof. Dr. Louis Kotzé and Prof. Dr. Jelena Bäumler at the end of the workshop revisited these points and examined them from the perspectives of those involved.
