Leuphana University Lüneburg is honouring international scientist Paula Jarzabkowski with an honorary doctorate. The organisational researcher is Professor of Strategic Management at the University of Queensland Business School in Brisbane, Australia.
Paula Jarzabkowski is one of the developers of the field of ‘strategy as practice’ in management and organisational research. Her academic work has created a new understanding of organisational and strategic processes and inspired an entire generation of researchers. Her ethnographic work is considered the gold standard for qualitative empirical research.
The economist has published more than 70 journal articles, three books, two edited volumes and eight special issues.
She is listed among the top 1% of scientists in ‘Economics and Business’ in the Essential Science Indicators and has more than 22,300 citations. Paula Jarzabkowski has also made a name for herself in the areas of action orientation and sustainability, two of Leuphana's guiding principles.
Her research on ‘disasters’ and ‘disaster insurance’ has contributed to a better understanding of mechanisms of action in organisations and drawn attention to important issues that were previously marginalised at best.
The honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Management and Technology at Leuphana is awarded to Paula Jarzabkowski for her outstanding achievements in management and organisational research.
Prof. Dr. Karina Frick is awarded the Leuphana Young Researcher Award for her outstanding, socially relevant research contributions and for their communication beyond the academic community.
Karina Frick critically examines language use and linguistic competence, especially in digital media and with a focus on implicit selection mechanisms and the resulting power relations. As a member of the Council for German Orthography, she advocates a contemporary, inclusive and student-friendly set of rules. Due to her expertise, she is frequently invited as speaker or reviewer and thus contributes to the visibility of her research area and the Leuphana University Lüneburg.
Dr Iniobong Essien is being awarded the Leuphana Special Prize for Gender and Diversity Research for his scientific achievements and his commitment to diversity and intergroup research. Iniobong Essien investigates forms and mechanisms of social inequality and institutional racism. In a project funded by the German Research Foundation, he developed a new theoretical model for investigating context-based discrimination in schools. The social psychologist's excellent achievements in diversity research are reflected not least in his publications in high-ranking international journals. Essien also inspires students to engage with diversity-related topics in his teaching and is committed to knowledge transfer through extra-university continuing education for teachers.
The Leuphana Special Prize for Gender and Diversity Studies is awarded to Prof. Dr. Ben Trott for his academic achievements and commitment in the fields of queer and gender studies.
Ben Trott researches the politicisation of identity constructs and gender norms. His academic publications have made a significant contribution to the reorientation of queer studies in German-speaking countries, as evidenced by numerous positive reviews in renowned journals and daily newspapers. The co-spokesperson of the Gender and Diversity Research Network at Leuphana University Lüneburg is also particularly committed to the internationalisation and promotion of doctoral students.
Leuphana University Lüneburg honours outstanding achievements in the areas of knowledge transfer, cooperation and impact by the professor groups and the scientific project management team led by Prof. Dr. Paul Drews in the project Transformation through Innovation and Cooperation in Communities (TrICo) for the conception, acquisition and establishment of the four Leuphana Innovation Communities together with the scientific staff.

The Transformation through Innovation and Cooperation in Communities (TrICo) project recognises an outstanding application-oriented research initiative that stands out for its cooperative, effective and forward-looking approach to knowledge transfer. The award and funding for the project as part of the German federal and state government's ‘Innovative Universities’ programme underscore the quality and relevance of the commitment shown by the scientists involved.
As the largest and most ambitious project for transdisciplinary knowledge production and transfer in an innovative community model that Leuphana has been able to attract over the past ten years, TrICo brings together outstanding research expertise from the four faculties of Education, Cultural Studies, Sustainability, and Management and Technology. The communities cooperate with the Helmholtz Centre Hereon, the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences and Ubuntu Social Impact Lab GmbH (Utopia), as well as numerous other partners such as art and cultural institutions, schools, non-profit organisations and institutes in the fields of education and social entrepreneurship, as well as companies, regional economic development agencies, chambers of commerce and innovation centres.
This year, the Transfer and Impact Award will also be honoured with prize money from the Lüneburg University Foundation for Research and Business.
The student initiative ‘Take Initiative!’ is being honoured for its outstanding voluntary work.
This year, the management team of ‘Take Initiative!’ – Justus Hein, Dora Großkopf, Johanna Madeline Hauck, Justin Oliver Alpert and Gabriel Berg – is receiving an award for its extraordinary voluntary work. The members of the initiative enable students to launch their own charitable projects, but have also implemented various project ideas themselves in a very short time. Before founding the initiative, the members were concerned that many students were fundamentally interested in social engagement. However, due to a lack of time, concerns about making a commitment or a lack of motivation to start the projects, these ideas often fail to be implemented. Take Initiative! aims to overcome these obstacles by providing a framework for low-threshold, one-off projects. Kick-off events and idea workshops are used to collect, develop and refine project ideas that make a social and/or environmental contribution to society. And with great success!
Projects such as selling waffles and drinks at the music ensemble's summer picnic in exchange for donations raised over €200, which was collected for the refugee organisation ‘Leave No One Behind’. During Opening Week, the ‘Take Initiative!’ organised a So-Li Party, which offered networking opportunities for first-year students and raised over €900 in donations for the organisation ‘Refugees in Libya’. This was followed by other charitable projects such as a Christmas card crafting event and a fundraising concert for the organisation Sea-Watch. The initiative is currently collecting ideas for charitable projects with its network of over 100 people.
The ‘Take Initiative!’ impressed the jury with its innovative and professional approach to addressing social change with low-threshold support services, thereby creating structures that have a positive and lasting impact at the university itself, in the region and beyond the state borders. It would like to thank all those involved for their exemplary commitment and the professional, innovative and socially valuable implementation and support of various projects and networking initiatives.
The award winners representing ‘Take Initiative!’ are: Oliver Alpert, Johanna Augustin, Gabriel Berg, Carlotta Cordes, Johanna Hauck, Justus Hein, Dora Großkopf, Alena Keite, Johanna Manhés and Luise Voelker.
