Residency 2016/2017
The Residency Grant of the Leuphana Arts Program for 2016 has been awarded to the German artist Johannes Paul Raether. Raether will present his work at Leuphana in May 2016 and then be involved in the university in various formats during the course of the year. He will develop his project with academics and students of the Leuphana. A course is planned for the winter semester 2016/17.

During his residency at the LAP, Johannes Paul Raether will work on further developing the research avatars Transformellae und WordWideWitch. In his project draft he states:
For the art residency at the Leuphana Arts Program, I propose bringing my artistic alter ego, the “Drag-Research-Avatar” Transformella to the university. As a “being,” “creation,” “figure,” or precisely an “avatar,” Transformella functions within a “herd” I have created as a collector and the medium of an assemblage of improbable and often also absurd moments, techniques, narrations, and knowledge contexts.
Transformella’s psycho-realistic research is focused on altering parameters of human reproduction at the moment of their biotechnological outsourcing from the body and the direct places and temporal horizons of sexual reproduction. Since 2010 Transformella has been engaged with establishing a (fictive) learning and teaching institute that applies the means of distorting, exaggerating and alienating language, material and space to work out the contradictions of radical digital and biotechnological changes in the field of the life sciences.
The main concern in this context is to start from the field of culture with the attempt – despite all ascriptions of inefficiency and (technical) amateurism – to develop social and communal reproduction models, appropriation strategies, modes of speaking, and visions together with interested parties, students and activists.
Johannes Paul Raether lives and works in Berlin. From 2006 to 2011, he co-organized the artist-run space “Basso” and participated in its collective performances. His works and performances have been presented at, among others, the KUMU Art Museum, Tallinn (2010), Tensta Konsthall, Stockholm (2010), Kunsthaus Bregenz (2012), Hebbel Am Ufer, Berlin (2012), KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin (2013), Savvy Contemporary, Berlin (2014), Donau Festival Krems (2014) Foreign Affairs Festival of the Berliner Festspiele (2015) and the Friedericianum, Kassel (2015). Solo shows, among others, at Galerie September, Berlin (2011), Künstlerhaus Stuttgart (2012), Ludlow 38, New York City (2014), Transmission Gallery, Glasgow (2015), and District Berlin (2016). Together with the duo Discoteca Flaming Star, he organized various performance projects and edited the book “Zeig Her, Führ Vor, Tausch Ein. Performance-Art-Academy“ (2013). Raether contributes to Texte zur Kunst and in 2013 he was visiting professor at the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg. He has been awarded the Villa Romana Kunstpreis (2015), among others, and is currently Artist in Residence at the Leuphana Arts Program of the Leuphana University Lüneburg.http://www.johannespaulraether.net/
