Opening Event for the Academic Year 2025/26

16. Oct

  • Room: C40.256 (Central Building)

  • From 13:30 to 15:30

The Joachim Herz Doctoral School of Law is celebrating the start of the new academic year together with the GoChains research group (Wissenschaftsraum). This collaboration is based on shared interests in managing current transformations through legal and administrative instruments, as well as questions of justice and the global protection of people and the environment.

The event will feature presentations by two experts. Dr Christina Saulich works for the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), focusing particularly on topics such as supply chains and critical raw materials. Meike Schulze works at the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP), focusing on economic issues in sub-Saharan Africa and sustainability governance, resource policy and related partnerships.

We are very much looking forward to an informative event on supply chains and critical raw materials. This issue is extremely important and timely due to the steadily growing demand for relevant materials, such as cobalt, lithium and nickel, which are essential for the energy and mobility transition. Current discussions focus on the compatibility of measures for the extraction and processing of these materials with human and environmental welfare, working conditions, child labour, modern slavery, and much more. We are therefore very grateful for this opportunity to gain insight into this complex situation and the practical aspects of sustainability- and transformation-related research.
