Guest Lecture: The Impact of Colonial Histories and Inequalities on International Relations and their Legacy in Contemporary International Law
18. Nov
18 November 2025, 18:00 to 19:30
Location: C40.601 (Central Building)
On 18 November 2025, Dr Peya Mushelenga will be a guest speaker at Leuphana University Lüneburg. At a joint event organised by the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in International Law of Security, Peace and Sustainable Development (ILSPSD) and the Joachim Herz Doctoral School of Law, he will deliver a lecture entitled
'The Influence of Colonial History and Inequalities on International Relations and their Legacy in Contemporary International Law'.
Dr Mushelenga served as Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Namibia until early 2025. Prior to this, he was Minister of Urban and Rural Development (2018–20), Minister of Information and Communication Technologies (2020–24) and Member of Parliament (2005–25). During his time in office, Namibia jointly organised the UN Summit of the Future with Germany — a United Nations congress on the future of the international order and international law.
Thanks to his experience in politics and academia, Dr Mushelenga is uniquely qualified to address the topic of the colonial origins of international law and the continuing existence of (neo)colonial structures within the international order. His lecture will also offer insights into the African perspective on international law and demands for reform of this legal system and the United Nations.
Interested parties are cordially invited to attend this event.
