Lecture Series: The United States in Transition

2026-01-07

The United States is currently undergoing significant changes and developments in its domestic and international relations. We have seized this opportunity to examine these transformative aspects in a lecture series, beginning with two events on 7 and 15 January 2026.

First, we welcomed Professor Susan Williams, Walter W. Foskett Professor Emerita and former co-director of the Center for Constitutional Democracy at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law. She gave a lecture on the topic of ‘Democracy in America: The Constitutional Roots of the Current Crisis’, addressing the structural aspects of the American Constitution that facilitate the current shift towards authoritarianism in the United States.

The second event was titled ‘The US Assault on Venezuela’. This event featured a discussion between Professor Dr Christopher R Rossi (University of the Arctic) and Dr Daniel R. Quiroga-Villamarín (Universität Wien, currently a Hauser/Remarque Global Fellow at New York University). They offered US and Latin American perspectives on the capture of Nicolás Maduro, and discussed the operation's international legal implications and its historical and legal background. Finally, they considered possible future scenarios and their potential long-term impact on the world order.

We would like to thank all the speakers for their contributions to these topical and interesting events. We look forward to continuing this series of events.
