Climate Justice Lab: 2nd Workshop and Public Event
2026-03-12
What role do (inter-)national courts play in the era of climate change? And do they take issues of (climate) justice into account when making decisions?
In recent years, both international and national courts have handed down landmark rulings regarding the legal framework for addressing climate change. In 2025, for example, both the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights published notable advisory opinions, paving the way for international law to engage more extensively and in greater depth with climate change, its consequences, and their implications for states.
To examine these issues in greater detail, and discuss the extent to which questions of climate justice have been considered in recent developments, the Joachim Herz Doctoral School of Law organised the second Climate Justice Lab in collaboration with Tilburg Law School and Wageningen University & Research during the 2025/26 winter semester. The final workshop in this series took place in Tilburg from 12 to 13 March, offering participants the opportunity to present their research findings and an overview of their work, as well as potential publication formats.
Furthermore, we took the opportunity once again this year to invite experts in the field to discuss and present our findings at a public event. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Dr Juan Auz (Tilburg University), Dr Laura Mai (University of Amsterdam) and Professor Dr Corina Heri (University of Antwerp) for their valuable contributions to the event.
