Honorary Doctorates

With the award of honorary doctorates, the faculties of Leuphana University of Lüneburg acknowledge the special academic merits of outstanding academic personalities at international level. They receive awards for achievements in research, teaching and science in the broad sense, which, to a great extent, are perceived as such within the relevant academic communities. The academic work of those awarded honorary doctorates is of great importance for the faculty from the point of view of content and methodology. Thus, it enriches their profile and that of the University. Their involvement over many decades makes them an example of lifelong learning, reflecting and keeping knowledge up to date in a variety of contexts. They are, therefore, a model for Leuphana as a university community.

The Faculty Council votes on who will receive an honorary doctorate. By the solemn award of the honorary doctorates as part of the dies academicus ceremony, the University accepts those to whom they are conferred into the fold of its community.

The Faculty of Sustainability is awarding an honorary doctorate (Dr. rer. nat. h.c.) to the British natural scientist, Prof. James Clark, as recognition for his achievements in the field of green and sustainable chemistry.

James Clark of the University of York is a professor at the Institute of Chemistry, where he is the leader of The Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence. He holds a PhD in chemistry and is engaged in researching the application of green technologies towards solving chemical challenges. His work aims at making chemical processes more environmentally friendly and energy efficient, contributing thus to sustainable development. In doing so, networking with players from politics, industry and science, he fulfills a key role, making him the pioneer of natural science-based inters- and transdisciplinary research approaches.

Because his work solves challenges related to sustainable development by looking beyond actual chemistry, his contribution to social transformation attracted the attention of the Faculty of Sustainability. More...

Die Fakultät Bildung verleiht Felicitas Hoppe die Ehrendoktorwürde (Dr. phil. h.c.) für ihr Werk in seiner herausragenden literaturwissenschaftlichen, poetologischen wie bildungstheoretischen Bedeutung.

Mit dieser Ehrenpromotion würdigt die Leuphana Universität Lüneburg erstmalig eine Schriftstellerin und zugleich Wissenschaftlerin in ihrer höchsten sprachlichen Souveränität. Ihr Schreiben reflektiert die für Wissenschaft wie Bildung gleichermaßen relevanten epistemologischen Fragen nach Wahrnehmung und Übersetzung, Bewegung, Entwurf und Praxis. Ihre Texte wurden international übersetzt und mit verschiedenen Preisen ausgezeichnet (Georg-Büchner-Preis, Bremer Literaturpreis, Villa Aurora, Aspekte-Literaturpreis, Erich Kästner Preis u.v.a.).

Nicht nur im Rahmen zahlreicher Gastprofessuren an Universitäten in Deutschland und den USA, sondern auch in ihrem stetigen Dialog mit der Literaturwissenschaft macht Felicitas Hoppe das fast vergessene Wissenschaftsideal einer engen Verzahnung von Sprechen, Schreiben und Handeln wieder präsent. Die Fakultät Wirtschaftswissenschaften verleiht den akademischen Ehrengrad des Dr. iur (h.c.) an den britischen Juristen Paul L Davies.

Paul Davies ist der unbestrittene Doyen des englischen Gesellschaftsrechts. Sein „Principles of Modern Company Law“ ist bis zum heutigen Tage die Standardlektüre aller englischen Company Law Studierenden. Seine Forschung genießt weltweite Aufmerksamkeit und ist in besonderem Maße der Interdisziplinarität und Internationalität verschrieben. Er ist Mitherausgeber und Autor der international stark beachteten "Anatomy of Corporate Law". Das Buch erschließt die gemeinsamen Wurzeln der Gesellschaftsrechte der Welt auf Basis der ökonomischen Analyse des Rechts.

Hervorzuheben ist die besondere Beziehung, die Paul Davies zu Deutschland pflegt. Er kann deutsch lesen und treibt den Dialog zwischen den verschiedenen Welten des deutschen Civil Law-Gesellschaftsrechts und des englischen Common Law-Gesellschaftsrechts voran.
