Renewable Energies

WHAT MEASURES HAS LEUPHANA ALREADY IMPLEMENTED TO COVER ITS ENERGY CONSUMPTION FROM RENEWABLE ENERGY?

Since 2007, Leuphana has implemented the following measures to replace conventional energy with renewable energy and in this way support the climate-neutral operation of the university, which has been achieved since 2014.

100% GREEN ELECTRICITY FOR THE ENTIRE UNIVERSITY

  • All Leuphana University of Lüneburg campuses have been supplied with 100 per cent green electricity since January 2012. With the transition to the sponsorship of a foundation under public law, Leuphana had the opportunity to issue its own call for tenders for electricity supply and to consistently pursue its goal of climate neutrality in this field as well. The criteria for evaluating the bids therefore included not only economic efficiency but also the potential for CO2 savings.

100% BIOGAS FOR THE HEAT SUPPLY OF THE CENTRAL CAMPUS

  • In 2013, the heat supply from the combined heat and power plant located at the central campus was completely converted to 100% biogas. The switch to renewable heat supply brought a drastic reduction in the university's CO2 emissions.

PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEMS ON 9 BUILDINGS

  • Photovoltaic systems with an output of 653 kWp were installed on the roofs of nine buildings on the central campus in 2013 and 2014. This covers 20% of Leuphana's annual electricity requirements. By using east and west roofs, the solar power is available for the university's own consumption from the morning hours until the evening.

SOLAR THERMAL ENERGY ON STUDIO 21

  • A solar thermal system was installed on the roof of the University Sports Centre Studio 21 in 2013 to heat the shower water.

COOLING THE SERVER ROOMS WITH RENEWABLE ENERGY

  • The cooling of the server room in Building 7 was switched to free cooling. The newly built server room in building 41 is supplied with regeneratively generated cooling from the combined heat and power plant.
