Neglected Stories - Hidden Histories: Transatlantic Exchange on Experiences of Exclusion and Racism in the United States and Germany

14. May

Exchange on experiences of discrimination on May 14 from 3-6 p.m.

The Gustav Stresemann Institute of Lower Saxony and the MIZ invite you to an active exchange on experiences of exclusion, discrimination and racism from 3-6 p.m. on May 14, 2025.
As part of the “Living Library” method, a total of 12 guests from the USA and Germany will be available as living books for personal conversations. “Readers” can listen to their stories and ask them questions. The living books and their readers engage in a dialogue that offers both sides a unique learning experience.
At the center of the exchange are (memory) narratives and the question of how we can intervene in dominant discourses to make “silent” histories and marginalized narratives visible to the public.
In both Germany and the United States, important questions arise: How is history written, taught, and publicly discussed? People who have been historically marginalized and whose stories are not publicly recognized face resistance. Where can we find spaces for solidarity and where do we find differences in the U.S. and Germany?
The conversations will take place in three consecutive slots of about 45 minutes each. During each slot, four different guests from the U.S. and Germany will be available for discussion in different rooms at the same time.

The conversations will be held in English.
