Sustainability as a shared responsibility: how we shape Leuphana
Our shared mission statement and sustainability strategy provide the framework – and the space. Through various structures and formats, we enable students and staff to actively shape sustainability. In this way, Leuphana becomes not only a learning institution, but also a place where sustainability is naturally taken into account – in research, teaching and everyday university life.
Continuous improvement
EMAS and sustainability reporting ensure transparency and continuous improvement.
Beyond its ecological footprint, Leuphana also focuses its campus operations on its `sustainable handprint´: measures and structures are designed not only to reduce emissions and resource consumption, but also to actively enable and reinforce sustainable practices. Specific concepts already exist for university sports, the library, and the IT and media centre.
Students
Students actively shape sustainability at the university – in seminars, in over 80 initiatives, in the general students’ committee or in self-organised autonomous teaching. The students' commitment is diverse, creative and shapes campus life.
| Student Sustainability Office | Networking, informations and consulting |
| Initiatives on campus | In more than 80 student initiatives, students apply what they have learned in theory alongside their studies: from the seed library or supporting educationally disadvantaged young people, to sustainable music festivals and the edible campus. |
| Student Initiatives Organisation (DSi) | The DSi is the federal organisation of the student initiatives at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg; it promotes the cooperation between the initiatives. |
| AStA - General Students’ Committee of Leuphana | AStA demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability: from the sustainability initative Eco?-Logical!, the KonRad self-help bicycle repair shop, to tableware rental and the voluntary commitment to ‘fundamental sustainability’ for even more sustainable consumption. |
| Ombudsperson for students | Exchange between students and teachers, university management and administration. The ombudsperson takes on board ideas, suggestions, concepts and problems from students and acts as a mediator between the various interest groups. |
| Students help shape the university | Apart from their own professional training, students are also active in various organisational areas at Leuphana University of Lüneburg. |
