Day of Teaching on November 23rd, 2022

Teaching in the Present and the Future

2022-11-15 The restrictions during the Corona pandemic have permanently changed teaching. In the keynote "Digital, open and collaborative: New teaching formats in times of crisis - and beyond?" by Prof Dr Elke Schüßler (JKU Linz) and Prof Dr Hannah Trittin-Ulbrich (Leuphana), the researchers will report on an innovative teaching concept. The lecture is the prelude to the discussion on this year's motto "Teaching in the Present and the Future.

The Corona lockdown came unexpectedly: "In Austria, the summer semester already begins in March. Because of the lockdown announced in mid-March 2020, I decided two years ago, together with Leonhard Dobusch from the University of Innsbruck, to develop an innovative, open, digital teaching format," recalls Dr Elke Schüßler, professor of business administration and organisational scientist at the University of Linz. The expertise of researchers from an organisational science network was to be bundled in a course on crisis management. "Organising in times of crisis: The case of Covid 19" was developed within a very short time across countries and universities. "We were already able to publish and teach the syllabus and the first online lectures at the end of March," explains Schüßler. "The content is provided on an online platform. During the pandemic, for example, Leuphana students then met with me virtually and discussed problems," explains Dr Hannah Trittin-Ulbrich, assistant professor of business administration, especially business ethics at Leuphana, who contributed to the course. This year, the network developed a second seminar entitled "Organising in times of crisis: The case of war".

The courses are designed for master's degree programmes in business administration, management and organisational studies. The collaborative teaching project provides a collective knowledge base on organising in times of crisis on the network. The knowledge is not only accessible to students at the participating universities, but can also be used by civil society as a source of information. "Organising in times of crisis" was awarded the Aspen Institute's "Ideas Worth Teaching" Award 2020.

The two researchers will present the digital, open and collaborative concept with its advantages and disadvantages for discussion at the  Day of Teaching: "Especially in an open format, data protection is challenging," explains Hannah Trittin. Together with the Copenhagen Business School, she further developed the format into a Global Classroom on digital transformation, "We used, among other things, a Danish tool for collaborative teaching, with which students could evaluate each other's performance. It was a didactic success. But when the software went into American hands, we could no longer use the tool."

In these projects, students benefit from the wealth of experts they could hardly experience in a purely face-to-face format. Conversely, the learners have to adapt to different teaching styles. In the meantime, both researchers use the learning platforms in a hybrid format: "The students come to the seminar already well prepared and we can work with the students on the basis of the knowledge they have acquired at home." Hannah Trittin sums up: "Classroom teaching cannot be replaced, but it can be enriched by digital tools."

On November 23rd 2022, Day of Teaching will take place again from 2 to 6 p.m. after a break due to the pandemic. This year's Teaching Day is organised and designed in cooperation between the Leuphana Teaching Service and the two projects "Leuphana: Digital Transformation Lab for Teaching and Learning (DigiTaL)" and "Souver@nes digitales Lehren und Lernen in Niedersachsen (SOUVER@N)" funded by the Foundation for Innovation in Higher Education.
