Information for students on studying in the winter semester 2020/21

2020-10-13 On monday, the 12th of october, we will start into the event period of the winter semester 2020/2021, which - according to current information - will again be an extraordinary and unfortunately still one far away from "normal operation". In July, the academic committees had agreed to allow more presence on campus again in the winter semester. With the number of new infections with the corona virus now rising more strongly again, it is particularly important that all members of the university familiarize themselves with the guidelines and specifications for infection protection before the event. Please pay attention to these guidelines and guidelines so that the teaching activities can be at least partially taken up and continued in the winter semester, thus enabling the moments of encounter on campus, which are so important for all members of the university, to be made possible. Last week's incident during the College Start Week has shown the serious effects that risky behavior can have and how quickly courses in attendance may have to be suspended.

In the winter semester 2020/2021, numerous teachers want to use the newly created possibility of a hybrid teaching format, in which small groups can come together on campus while other participants are connected via video. In addition, a large part of the teaching will also be carried out as online teaching in the winter semester; a small part of the courses will also be taught in full attendance or in alternating combinations of online and attendance teaching. All courses are planned in such a way that teaching and examinations can be converted to digital formats in the event of a renewed lockdown and can be maintained in any case.

Should you participate in events in attendance or proportionate attendance, please be sure to observe the following basic regulations in the interest of the health of all university members. These regulations are described in detail in the guidelines linked below. Detailed further information can also be found on the Corona pages of the university at www.leuphana.de/portale/coronavirus/studierende.

  1. BEGINNING: In the first week of the lecture period, all courses without exception take place online. Lecturers will use this week to plan the course with you, to discuss the following regulations for the winter semester and to organize attendance times if necessary.

  2. ORDER: For all seminar rooms, the Occupational Safety and Building Management departments have calculated a corona-related maximum number of persons who may be in the room at any one time. This maximum number of persons may not be exceeded at any time during the course. Seating plans for the seminar rooms were also drawn up. Please note that the tables and chairs may not be moved in order to maintain the specified minimum distance.

  3. PARTICIPATION: In the case of hybrid courses, the teacher decides which participants are present at the respective session. Attendance should rotate so that all participants can attend at regular intervals. However, you are not obliged to attend hybrid courses in class, but can decide to participate online only, depending on your individual situation (e.g. membership of a risk group or other personal conditions).

  4. DOCUMENTATION: In order to be able to trace possible chains of infection in the case of corona infection of participants* in a course, it is absolutely necessary to document the contact details of students participating in classroom sessions. All university lecturers are obliged to document this data at the beginning of the sessions or immediately afterwards in myStudy in the fields provided for this purpose. If this data is personal, it must be deleted at the latest after the end of the lecture period; otherwise, the data protection regulations from the DSGVO, the NDSG and special legal regulations such as § 17 NHG apply.

  5. RISK GROUPS: If you belong to a risk group for a severe COVID-19 disease course according to the definition of the Robert Koch Institute, you should choose digital forms of teaching if possible or only participate in face-to-face sessions under special protection. If you have any questions in this regard, please contact the respective teacher in good time. If the course is only held in class, please contact the responsible staff member in the Office of the Dean of Studies.

  6. DATA PROTECTION: Special data protection regulations apply to hybrid courses at Leuphana; these can be found in § 2 of the respective "Corona Annex" to the respective framework examination regulations at www.leuphana.de/universitaet/entwicklung/lehre/organisation/pruefen/rpo-und-fsa

  7. EXAMINATIONS: In the winter semester 2020/21, as in the summer semester 2020, there are also regulations for the alternative execution of examinations, which you will find in § 3 of the "Corona Facilities" to the respective framework examination regulations
    1. for the College at www.leuphana.de/college/studium/pruefungen
    2. for the Graduate School at www.leuphana.de/graduate-school/master/studium-organisieren/pruefungen
    3. for the Professional School at www.leuphana.de/professional-school/berufsbegleitend-studierende/pruefungen

  8. STUDENT WORK PLACES: In order to create places of residence and work for you between events, additional student work places will be made available. These can also be used with your own headsets to participate in a preceding or following online event immediately after or before a classroom event. Current information on student workstations can be found on the central Corona site for students at www.leuphana.de/portale/coronavirus/studierende.

  9. MINIMUM DISTANCE: A minimum distance of 1.50 m (2.00 m for sports events) to other people must be maintained. You are requested not to wait in the corridors of the university buildings, but to go directly to your seats in the seminar rooms. Please pay attention to each other in order to enable your fellow students* as well as yourself to participate on the campus safely and as carefree as possible.

  10. MASK OBLIGATIONS: In all buildings of the university, masks are compulsory in corridors, staircases and sanitary facilities. The mask may only be taken off when you reach the place in the seminar room.

  11. VENTILATION: Seminar rooms not equipped with ventilation systems must be ventilated by window ventilation in preparation for the event. Event rooms in which window ventilation is required are provided with appropriate instructions by the building management. When the first yellow diode of the CO2-indicators lights up – otherwise at intervals of 20 min for 3 to 10 min (shorter ventilation times at low outside temperatures) – and after events, the rooms must be ventilated by shock ventilation.

In the winter semester 2020/21, we are all once again particularly dependent on your flexibility and high willingness to adapt quickly to changing conditions and to bear new regulations and the associated expenses. In spite of all the restrictions, we have also experienced a great deal of commitment from you as students in the 2020 summer semester - albeit digitally in the courses, in initiatives and projects, in your participation in university development. These experiences also allow us to look optimistically at the great challenge of realistically and responsibly assessing the incidence of infection at all times, in order - especially in your interest - to make personal encounters on campus possible again this semester as far as possible. This requires a particularly high level of commitment from all members of the university and a particularly high sense of responsibility from all members of the university.

The presidential committee is already and will continue to be particularly grateful to you for this.
