New Guide for Gender-inclusive Language

2020-07-11

There are several ways to signalise inclusiveness when speaking and writing in English, some of which the Office for Equal Opportunities summarised in a new guide. Using gender-inclusive language aims to speak and write in a way that does not discriminate against a particular gender identity. Therefore, gender-inclusive language should not only acknowledge that the categories of “women” and “men” are always trans-inclusive but should also ensure that identities beyond the gender binary are taken into account. Among other measures, gender-inclusive language helps to counteract discrimination against women, trans, inter* and non-binary people and strives to build a safer, more inclusive environment at Leuphana University.
