GENDER AND DIVERSITY CERTIFICATE FOR MASTER STUDENTS

Are you interested in questions of gender, inclusion and exclusion, power and protest, social inequality, diversity and difference, and equality of opportunity? If so the Gender and Diversity Certificate is for you! The master’s level certificate is achieved by completing three seminars. This requires taking two seminars within Complementary Studies and one additional seminar that can be taken either as part of Complementary Studies or your major. The workload is 15 credit points. The Complementary Studies regulations apply.

The Master's Complementary Studies at Leuphana University of Lüneburg is inter- and transdisciplinary as well as dialogue-oriented and aims to promote critical thinking on the part of the students and to adopt an overarching, reflective perspective. The Gender Diversity Certificate in the Master's Complementary Studies is embedded in this framework.
An uncovering and understanding of discrimination, inequality-promoting structures and practices, or societal gender relations is usually not based on a single academic discipline, but on different academic perspectives. The Gender Diversity Certificate gives students from different disciplines and majors - education, humanities, social sciences, sustainability and cultural studies, as well as natural sciences, economics and technology - the opportunity to learn about and discuss insights from gender and diversity studies using interdisciplinary approaches. This opens up specific approaches that can complement each other, but may not always be easy to bring together. The goal of the certificate program is to support students in reflecting on findings critically and in a dialogue-oriented manner and to develop personal and social-communicative skills through respectful and appreciative discussions in interdisciplinary contexts.

The certificate allows you to do the following:

• Explore important issues of gender and diversity within your studies – and without the need to acquire additional credit points.
• Think critically about social and cultural norms and stereotypes.
• Explore how categories of social difference emerge and change.
• Examine questions of gender injustice and the challenge of achieving equality of opportunity in social, political and professional contexts.
• Look at how social movements have transformed society, power relations, public policy, laws and attitudes.
• Receive an introduction to the theories and methods that shape fields such as Gender Studies, Queer Studies, Transgender Studies, Disability Studies, Migration Studies as well as research on diversity, racism and intersectionality.
• Develop an understanding of the role of gender and other forms of difference in the world today in a way that will be of use in a range of professions or at the PhD level.

The Gender and Diversity Certificate for master’s students is an optional addition to your studies that can be integrated into any degree granted by Leuphana Graduate School.

HOW TO REGISTER

Registration is possible at any time. However, if possible, you should register for participation six weeks prior to the start of the lecture period. Once registered, you will be entitled to early enrolment for one seminar within the certificate per semester.

DOCUMENTING COMPLETED COURSES AND RECEIVING THE CERTIFICATE

Once you have completed all three Gender and Diversity Certificate seminars, please send details (course names, dates (i.e. semesters) completed, and examination numbers) along with your Transcript of Records to gdzmaster@leuphana.de. A document of confirmation will then be sent to Student Services on your behalf, and you will be issued with the certificate.
