Gender Diversity Certificate for Bachelor Students

Are you interested in questions of gender, inclusion and exclusion, power and protest, social inequality, diversity and difference, and equality of opportunity? If so the Gender and Diversity Certificate is for you! The bachelor’s level certificate is achieved by taking two foundation seminars and two extension seminars as part of the Complementary Studies component of your degree. The workload is 20 credit points (i.e. four seminars with 5 CP each). The Complementary Studies regulations apply.

THINK AROUND THE CORNER. RETHINK. THINK FORWARD.

The certificate allows you to do the following.

  • Explore important issues of gender and diversity within Complementary Studies – and without the need to acquire additional credit points (except for those in teacher training).
  • Think critically about social and cultural norms and stereotypes.
  • Explore how categories of social difference emerge and change.
  • Examine questions of gender injustice and the challenge of achieving equality of opportunity in social, political and professional contexts.
  • Look at how social movements have transformed society, power relations, public policy, laws and attitudes.
  • Develop an understanding of the role of gender and other forms of difference in the world today in a way that will be of use in a range of professions or in your future studies at the master’s degree or PhD level.

THE FOUNDATIONS

Both required foundation seminars are taught in English.

  • The foundation seminar “Theories, Concepts and Practices of Gender Studies” (5 CP) takes place in the “Individual & Society” Complementary Studies subject area during the summer semester. (Additionally, the seminar may occasionally also be offered during the winter semester.)
  • The second foundation seminar “Theories and Applications of Intersectionality and Multidimensionality” (5 CP) is held in the “Economy & Innovation” subject area in Complementary Studies in the winter semester. (Additionally, the seminar may occasionally also be offered during the summer semester.)

Please note that the Complementary Studies enrolment rules apply to the Gender and Diversity Certificate. In the relaunched Complementary Studies program (from winter semester 2025-26), it is possible to repeat each module once as an additional achievement – provided places are available in the seminar. Please note however that credit points can only be achieved for each module once.

EXTENSION SEMINARS: CHOOSE FROM A VARIETY OF TOPICS

In addition to the two foundation seminars, two additional extension seminars (2 x 5 CP) must also be taken within Complementary Studies to complete the certificate. Students can select from an average of ten extension courses offered each semester in most (if not all) of the six Complementary Studies subject areas: “Digitality & Technology”, “Art & Communication”, “Nature & Environment”, “Values & Identity”, “Economy & Innovation”, “Individual & Society”. Some seminars are offered in German and others in English. An overview of the courses currently on offer within the Gender and Diversity Certificate as well as an archive of previous courses can be found here.

Registration

Registration is possible at any time. However, if possible, you should register for participation six weeks prior to the start of the lecture period. Once registered, you will be entitled to early enrolment for one seminar within the certificate per semester (either a foundation or an extension seminar).

To the registration form.

To enrol early for a course on the Gender and Diversity Certificate, please write to gdz-bachelor@leuphana.de specifying the course. The relevant deadlines will be announced via the email list to which all participants will be subscribed.

If you are no longer interested in acquiring the certificate, please de-register via: gdz-bachelor@leuphana.de

DOCUMENTING COMPLETED COURSES AND RECEIVING THE CERTIFICATE

Once you have completed both foundation seminars and two extension seminars, please send details (course names, dates (i.e. semesters) completed, and examination numbers) along with your Transcript of Records to gdz-bachelor@leuphana.de. You will receive confirmation which you can then send to Student Services. The Gender and Diversity Certificate will be issued by the person at Student Services responsible for your major.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR TEACHER TRAINING STUDENTS

The Gender and Diversity Certificate unfortunately cannot be fully integrated into bachelor’s degrees in teacher training because these only entail a maximum of 5 CP within Complementary Studies. However, it is possible for teacher training students to acquire additional credit points within Complementary Studies to achieve the certificate.
