Studies: M.Sc. Management & Business Development

Graduation year: 2017

Professional career: I work as a Key Account Manager in Consulting and Sales for an internationally active Swiss IT company. I came back to Germany after living in London for almost two years.

When I look back on my time at Leuphana today, then....

... I like to think back to the varied and very individual time, in which I could experience almost day and night in the university context. Of course, it was mainly the content that made me choose the subject focus at that time but studying is so much more than just sitting in lectures and working out reports and theses. The volunteer work in the student councils, committees, and student initiatives was also exciting and gave me personally a lot of opportunities to try things out and to get to know my strengths and weaknesses better. I also have very good memories of the many hours spent at numerous university sports activities, and the good parties in the student dormitories anyway.

How did your studies prepare you for your current job?

In my opinion, one can summarize the experiences from my studies for my later professional future in three essential areas:

1. of course, the technical knowledge gained from the major and minor, as well as the potential additional courses one may have taken out of personal interest.

2. the necessary self-discipline for the next exam or term paper, time management that suits you personally, and the fact to independently deal with a topic so deeply that you probably understand much more about it than most people you know.

3. social skills and social network. It may sound a bit trivial but being confident in a group and finding your own place in it is not so easy at first if you don't have a higher authority that decides about success or failure. You develop your own strengths especially when you must get out of your comfort zone because only then are you forced to deal with something new. Looking back, I would say that this made me lose my fear of change and the unknown new and instead see it as an opportunity. The former fellow students with whom you studied for exams even at night usually become friends for life. This network expands over time because they also make new contacts.

What are the advantages of studying at Leuphana?

For me personally, it was clearly the opportunity to freely choose a major, minor, and the numerous other activities in which I could get involved. In addition, there is the significant advantage of a campus university, where almost all buildings and facilities are located in one place, and which also gives very successful flexibility with the student dormitories and adjacent housing options for students. If you sat down on the Mensa meadow after the lectures, it was no problem at all to combine free time and studies. The numerous jobs at the university itself as a student assistant, for example, were also very suitable for financing one's studies.

To whom would you recommend studying at Leuphana?

I would recommend studying at Leuphana to anyone who prefers a future-oriented way of thinking and is not afraid of having to take unconventional paths that do not lead directly to the goal but require a different perspective.

What experience can I bring to the table as an Alumni Angel?

I spent a total of almost 8 years at Leuphana and, in addition to my Bachelor's degree in Business Administration and eBusiness (now Digital Business) and Master's degree in Management & Entrepreneurship Business Development with Data Science. I also worked as a student/scientific assistant. In addition, I was a Start Week mentor three times and worked as a research assistant for almost a year after my studies. Furthermost, I was on the student council BEM, various committees, etc.
