Mapping in Trans-disciplinary contexts - The LeuphanaCodex by Jazael Zapata

Thoughts, organization, cultural policy. Mapping as a method has reached a transdisciplinary level. From mind maps for the conception and structuring of ideas to research results on the organization and structure of social systems and the artistic representation of discourses and conversations.

The kick-off workshop ‘Organization as Medium of Contemporary Art’ of the Leuphana Innovation Community Art and Culture on 6 and 7 November 2023 brought together art scholars, organizational researchers, artists and art activists to discuss the connections between organization and art.

The discussions and results were documented in an experimental way: As mapping by the Mexican artist Jazael Olguin Zapata. Against the background of the mapping method in science, we accompanied his work on the ‘Leuphana Codex’ on film. In contrast to the factual-schematic results of research-based mappings, the artistic environment shows a playful approach - both with the topics and questions that are mapped and with the presentation.

This shows that mappings are ideally suited as a stimulus for reflection or for exchange in transdisciplinary projects. Mapping - whether scientific or artistic - is therefore a promising tool for knowledge transfer in projects such as the Leuphana Innovation Community Art and Culture.
