Leuphana, School & Games
2026-09-09 Bring Games to School! The Leuphana Innovation Community for School Improvement and Leadership met to discuss this topic as part of the “Schule & Spiel" initiative.
Highlighting and promoting the potential of board and party games in education: This is the goal of the “Schule & Spiel” initiative, founded by renowned game designer Uwe Rosenberg. The Leuphana Innovation Community for School Improvement and Leadership also pursues this mission with its self-developed card games, “Game of Schools” and “Game of Schools – Kids.”
At an initial meeting, Ninja Müller, Neele Tiedemann, and Dennis Wohlfeil from Leuphana University had the opportunity to discuss board and card games in a school setting with representatives of the “Schule & Spiel” initiative. Johannes Grimm, Thomas Berndhäuser, and Markus Zimmermann were not only able to provide valuable feedback on Leuphana University’s two serious games but also presented their own meta-games for classroom use. “Die Magier des purpurnen Lichts” (Johannes Grimm), “Die Champions der Einhorn-Liga,” and “Heroes of the Dark Realms” (both by Thomas Berndhäuser) impressively demonstrated how lessons can be structured around games—not just for a single class period, but over an extended period of time. The three meta-games can be used across any subject area, and the duration of play can span weeks, months, or even several school years. The games serve as a framework for subject-specific instruction and motivate students to actively participate in class, work through content on their own, or practice what they’ve learned.
This inspiring meeting gave rise to a wide range of ideas for collaboration between the Leuphana Innovation Community forSchool Improvement and Leadership and the “Schule & Spiel” initiative, which will now be discussed further and then put into action. Game on!
