Industry colloquium: Dialogue is essential!
2025-12-03 How can ecological sustainability and economic success be combined? More than 80 guests addressed this question on November 26 at the 2nd Leuphana Industry Colloquium “Value Creation through Circularity” hosted by the Leuphana Innovation Community Sustainable Production. The topics ranged from decarbonization and recycling to “design for circularity,” circular value and supply chains, and the cradle-to-cradle approach.
After exciting presentations on these topics, participants outlined solutions for their individual, but entirely transferable, challenges in an interactive gallery walk. The most important findings were:
- Partnerships and dialogue are needed to jointly reduce Scope 3 emissions.
- A comprehensive database is essential for the return of complex assemblies, but is often not available.
- Holistic system considerations are essential for designing circular value chains.
These takeaways were based on the insights and discussions of the day's speakers, who shared their perspectives from science and industrial practice.
- Christian Hein (Aurubis AG) used Aurubis as an example to show how material cycles, decarbonization, and recycling can be used as levers for sustainability in energy-intensive industries.
- Prof. Arthur Seibel (Leuphana) and Henning Peitzmeier (HELLA GmbH & Co. KGaA) illustrated how design for circularity already takes product recycling into account and can be systematized in specific electronic assemblies.
- Dr. Kathrin Kramer used the wind industry as an example to explain what is important in the circular design of value and supply chains.
- Prof. Dr. Michael Braungart (Braungart EPEA) presented the cradle-to-cradle approach he developed. Instead of pushing for climate neutrality, he provided new food for thought with the idea of climate positivity.
Conclusion: Circularity is not a theoretical concept—it is a practical design approach for a sustainable and economically successful future.
