Funding (exchange programs)

Below you will find information of possible funding for study abroad programs at our partner universities. Participating in exchange programs is particularly attractive because you usually do not have to pay tuition fees and, if you participate in the Erasmus program, you receive a reliable monthly study grant.

Erasmus+ Partner Universities

Students participating in exchange programs under Erasmus+ receive, in addition to tuition fee waivers, a country-dependent study grant of between 490 and 600 EUR per month. “Students with fewer opportunities“ (those with chronic illness or disability, long-term employment between 450 and 850 EUR/month, parents traveling with children, or first-time academics) can apply for an additional grant of 250 EUR per month with appropriate documentation.

Auslandsbafög and Erasmus cannot be fully combined. In addition to the Bafög, you can keep EUR 300 funding per month plus the top-up for students with children, with disabilities and with chronic illness.

Erasmus scholarships may be combined with other scholarships, please check with your scholarship provider.

Detailed information about the Erasmus+ Program for study abroad programs can be found here.

Partner Universities outside Europe/Erasmus+

At partner universities outside Europe, you usually do not have to pay tuition fees (the few exceptions are marked accordingly in the call for applications and in our database). To cover travel and/or living expenses, the following scholarship programs are particularly suitable:

The largest scholarship provider for students, graduates, doctoral candidates, and university teachers is the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). In the DAAD scholarship database, you will also find information about other scholarship providers. Please carefully check whether applications are possible for participants in exchange programs and/or international students. Information is available in German only.

BAföG

Study abroad can be funded through “Auslandsbafög”, which depends on the parents’ income. Auslandsbafög is a German government financial aid program that provides support to students. Different assessment limits apply for domestic and foreign funding, so students who do not receive domestic Bafög may still be eligible for funding abroad, depending on the costs. Further information is available here.

International students please check here to find out whether you are eligible to apply (in German only).
