Language and Intercultural Tandem
What is a Tandem?
Tandem is one of the most enjoyable ways to improve your language competencies. Additionally you will gain and/or expand your knowledge about and experience with other cultures. We define ‘language tandem’ as a mutual exchange in language learning. Or simply said: "You help me to improve my language and I will help you improve yours. This will help us understand each other better.” Tandem is language learning based on partnership and autonomy
You have several tandem models to choose from: German as a Foreign Language, Language Tandem and Intercultural Tandem.
Tandem Models
- German as a Foreign Language
International students practice German together with native German speakers who are students. You can choose individual learning goals. - Language Tandem
Students support each other to practice and deepen their native languages. The main focus is on language. You can choose individual learning goals. This tandem can only be done with languages taught at Leuphana. - Intercultural Tandem
The main focus is cultural and societal exchange. This kind of tandem can be done in German and English. Partners choose their topics together. Likewise this can be done in German and any other language if both partners have a B2 or higher level in that language.
How it works!
Tandem partners are normally placed at the beginning of each semester. So apply as early as possible. You will get an email within the first 3-4 weeks of the semester.

Tandem is very successful when partners cooperate during the planning and make conscious decisions about the goals and ways of working.
Registration
All students fill out the registration form here and send it to sprachtandem@leuphana.de. If you send it before the semester begins, you will get an answer within the first 3-4 weeks of the semester. Please note that we are not always able to find a tandem partner for everyone.
