Student Life
As a city known for its salt, the Hanseatic League, the Heath and as a university town, Lüneburg has many leisure activities to offer and to enrich student life in Lüneburg - from the Salt Museum to activities on water, and from the Heath landscape to student initiatives. For those who would like to explore the surrounding area, the North Sea and Baltic Sea, Hamburg, Hannover and Bremen are all nearby. A small, but certainly not complete, insight into the leisure activities in Lüneburg can be found below.
Many leisure activities in Lüneburg can be found right on the Leuphana campus. In addition to a wide range of university sports with over 150 activities, some of which are free or inexpensive, numerous student initiatives shape campus life. These initiatives are involved in topics that include international affairs, culture, society, politics, religion, the environment, and sports. Initiatives such as I:Si and the International Society particularly promote intercultural exchange and make it easier for new students to settle into university life.
The campus also offers many cultural opportunities: the cultural department of the Studierendenwerk (organization for student affairs) regularly organizes events and workshops related to art and culture. In addition, the music center invites students from all disciplines to participate in the choir, big band, or orchestra, thus creating a creative balance to everyday student life. The offer is complemented by the General Student Committee (AStA), which represents the interests of the student body and actively shapes campus life, as well as by various religious communities such as the Protestant, Catholic, and the Muslim communities, which offer spaces for exchange, engagement, and encounter.
Lüneburg also has a lot to offer in the way of cultural activities. It is one of the few towns in northern Germany that was not destroyed during the Second World War. The historic buildings lend character to the city centre. The small town is also known as a filming location for the telenovela "Rote Rosen" (Red Roses), and other productions like to visit, too . Various museums, theatres, cinemas and forums complete the cultural landscape and contribute to student life in Lüneburg.
With the Ilmenau and the Lüneburg Heath right on your doorstep, you have a variety of outdoor activities to choose from. Take the cycling trail for approx. 120 km along the Ilmenau, in fine weather try canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding or pedal boating on the Ilmenau, or walk through the heathland in the surrounding area.
Annual events in Lüneburg include the Lunatic Festival, which takes place on campus and is organised by students, the Conference Week, which is also organised by students in their first semester, and the Cultural Summer, which consists of a series of music acts known throughout Germany. We have put together a few impressions for you.
