This semester the Self-Access Center organizes once again various events where language learners can meet and talk to each other. All events have in common that they highlight the joy of speaking and getting to know each other.

Movie Night: Spirited Away – Brought to you by Unikino and the Self-Access Center

On Tuesday, the 6th of May, the Unikino in cooperation with the Self-Access Center is showing the Japanese animated film Spirited Away (千と千尋の神隠し), written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The screening will start at 20:00 in Auditorium and will be shown in the original Japanese with German subtitles.

The film follows ten-year-old Chihiro, who finds herself, along with her parents, in a mysterious world inhabited by ghosts. As her parents turn into pigs, Chihiro's courage and determination are put to the test as she tries to rescue them and return to the real world. Spirited Away is a visual masterpiece depicting a story dealing with themes like coming of age, identity, and the power of friendship. The film has won many awards, including an Oscar for best animated film.

A highlight of the screening will be an introduction to the film providing cultural context, given by a Japanese speaking tutor from the Self-Access Center.

Movie Night on Campus: Body Electric – A Glimpse into Modern Brazil

On November 7th at 8 p.m., the UniKino, in cooperation with the Self-Access Center, invites you to a special movie night in Lecture Hall 1 featuring Body Electric (2017) by director Marcelo Caetano. The award-winning film will be shown in the original Brazilian audio with English subtitles, taking us into the vibrant São Paulo.

The story centers on Elias, a young fashion designer who works in a textile factory by day and dives into the city’s pulsating nightlife by night. Between the routine of work and the excitement of nightlife, between friendships and personal dreams, Elias searches for his identity and a place where he can freely express himself. Body Electric tells a story of community, solidarity, and the freedom to find oneself, depicting a queer community that provides support and inspiration. The film paints a nuanced picture of Brazil, authentic and layered, moving beyond clichés.

The evening will begin with a brief introduction in Portuguese by the Self-Access Center, offering insights into Brazil’s cultural and social background.

International Book Flea Market

Language Books and International Literature

Would you like to learn a language but don't have the right language book yet? Or would you simply like to improve your language skills and are looking for entertaining literature in a foreign language? Then check out our international book flea market!

We’ll be offering a large selection of language books and international literature (e.g., in French, English, Spanish or Italian). You‘re also welcome to bring your own language books or foreign-language literature and swap them with our selection of books or simply leave them with us. The leftover books will be returned to the book exchange shelf in the Self-Access Center (C 5.104).

Close - International Evening with the Unikino Lüneburg

Together with the Unikino Lüneburg, the Self-Access Center will show the movie “Close” (2022), directed by Lucas Dhont. Léo and Rémi, both 13 years old, are best friends and are as close as brothers. They are inseparable, trust each other and share everything. As the summer comes to an end and they move to a new school, their close bond suddenly begins to falter - with tragic consequences. A sensitive and even Oscar-nominated drama about closeness, distance and alienation. With tender precision and an infinite understanding of the fragility of life on the threshold of adolescence, Lucas Dhont tells the stirring story of an intense friendship.

After a short bilingual introduction by the Self-Access Center, the film will be shown in its original French with English subtitles. Admission is free!

MondiALLE: Pubquiz & Karaoke "Songs from home"

The tutors of the Self-Access Center (SLZ) warmly invite everyone to a pub quiz and for karaoke music enthusiasts – whether on stage or in the audience – to our event next Friday. The stage is open to everyone so there will be a variety of different music genres. The theme is ‘Songs from home’, and you are especially welcome to sing songs that remind you of home. The evening will also give you the chance to talk to other students in a foreign language and to meet new people.

For a donation drinks will be provided. An international buffet is planned, and we would appreciate if the guests could bring their favorite snacks or dishes.
