Grammarly Premium
Grammarly is a one-of-a-kind app for writers that uses artificial intelligence to scan a writer’s work in real time. It not only finds spelling, plagiarism, and over 400 types of grammar mistakes, but it also offers suggestions on how to improve one’s writing style and looks for inconsistent spelling, capitalization, and ways of writing dates. It allows users to set the register (formal or informal), tone, type of writing (e.g. academic or business) and genre.
Before we explain how you can use Grammarly, please take the following information into consideration:

Can I use Grammarly and for how long?
The Language and Culture Team has purchased 15 Grammarly premium licenses that will be shared among Leuphana students. In order for students to be able to use the premium license, they must use their Leuphana email address to set up a Grammarly account. Should they already have a Grammarly account with another email address, they will need to set up a new account for the premium license to work.
Bachelor and master’s students as well as doctoral candidates may use it for a 2-week period. After that period, the Grammarly accounts will automatically return to the basic version. Students may re-apply for an additional 2-week period and be put on the waiting list should no licenses be available. Due to administrative limitations, Grammarly cannot be reserved in advance.
What are the strengths and weaknesses of Grammarly?
Grammarly Premium is not for everyone; it was made for native speakers (C1/C2 level). Please read the informational handout carefully which explains Grammarly’s strengths and weaknesses.
How can I get a 2-week license?
The next step is to send a request for a 2-week period. Please write to writingtools@leuphana.de when you are ready to use it, and include proof of your language level. Any recognized language certificate (e.g. TOEFL, TOEIC, Cambridge Exam) or the placement test offered by the Language and Culture Team will be accepted. Those with an English major are exempt. Please note that your 2-week period begins immediately after your request has been accepted.
