International Ph.D. students and Leuphana researchers can enroll in courses on German as a Foreign Language to acquire German language skills or to improve their current skills. The design of these courses allows for personal consultations and great flexibility with regard to study time. The courses include A1 classes for beginners and individuals with little background knowledge as well as a B1/B2 classes for more advanced learners.

The three-week intensive courses, “Leben und Studieren auf dem Campus” (Living and Studying on Campus), prepare students and applicants for their studies at Leuphana University. These courses take place shortly before the semester begins (March and September).

Guests (participants who are not regular students or exchange students) can register for these courses as long as they have an academic background. Please click here to request further information: course coordinator.

Another possibility for learning German is the international summer university. Scheduled for August, summer universities offer four-week German as a Foreign Language courses from levels A1 to C1. All foreign students wishing to study at Leuphana University Lüneburg have to take the DSH-Exam 2 or the TestDAF–4 or 5 exam. (See the DSH site for further details).

The Language and Culture Team offers fully immatriculated students seminars and workshops at different levels (A1 - C1/C2). The levels are chosen according to the "Common European Framework of References of Languages."

In order to register for German as a Foreign Language courses from the Team Language and Culturer as a non-matriculated learner, you must observe the following:

• An academic background is required.
• The registration form will be released only 4 weeks before lectures start and does not guarantee a place in a course. Registrations sent outside this deadline will not be processed. Registration form
• Once the registration form has been filled out, please send it to sprachenzentrum@leuphana.de.
• You will receive a message whether there is space available within the first three weeks of lectures period. Regular students can add/drop during this time and availability can vary.
• It is only possible to have one trial lesson. Afterwards you have to decide to accept or reject the course. Once you have accepted, the course fee must be transferred within one week.
• Please note that all German as a Foreign Language courses are not part of the Guest Auditor program and must be paid for separately.

A language tandem is one of the most enjoyable ways to improve your language competencies. Additionally you will gain and/or expand your knowledge about and experience with other cultures. We define ‘language tandem’ as a mutual exchange in language learning. Or simply said: "You help me to improve my language and I will help you improve yours. This will help us understand each other better.” Tandem is language learning based on partnership and autonomy. Guests (participants who are not regular students or exchange students) can also register for courses as long as they have an academic background.

Writing – here: using the foreign language – is a significant key competence for your course of studies. Writing competence means the mastery of German as a Foreign Language, including orthographic, lexical, idiomatic, and stylistic knowledge as well as knowledge about text structures and writing conventions. All of the above (and more) will be dealt with step by step in the seminar "Academic Writing Workshop."

You will acquire a range of basic and – later on – complex writing competences (e.g. writing a text using scholarly criteria). The seminar ends with a collective work on text building blocks and other linguistic guidelines that will help you write academic texts during your course of studies.

All texts will be peer-edited and peer-corrected, focusing on the relationship between content, terminology, and expression. Additionally, the connection between academic writing and intercultural competence – the interaction of language and culture – will be reflected during this process.
