WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO TAKE THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEST?
The new English language test (Versant English Writing Test) will be introduced in the winter semester of 2026. This language test is not a placement test, but rather serves as proof of English proficiency exclusively for the following groups: applicants for study abroad or an internship abroad, as well as currently enrolled master’s students in the four German-language master’s programs (Kulturwissenschaften: Kritik der Gegenwart, Kulturwissenschaften: Medien und Digitale Kulturen, Management & Engineering und Rechtswissenschaft).
If you would like to take an English course at the International Center, a placement test is not required. If you are unsure which course level (e.g., B2, B2.2, C1, or C2) is appropriate for you, you can contact the respective course instructors.
HOW DOES THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEST WORK?
The approximately 35-minute, internet-based Versant English Writing Test consists of the following five tasks and assesses the language skills listed in parentheses:
- Typing (text processing and spelling)
- Sentence Completion (vocabulary and register)
- Dictation (listening comprehension and grammar)
- Passage Reconstruction (reading comprehension and grammar)
- Email Writing (vocabulary and register, organization, grammar, reading comprehension)
HOW CAN I PREPARE FOR THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEST?
Since the test focuses on general written English proficiency, it is recommended that you take a practice test. The practice test will help you become familiar with the various tasks under time pressure. However, you will not receive feedback on your answers.
HOW CAN I REGISTER FOR THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEST?
Advance registration for the test is absolutely required. At the start of the semester, an online registration process with time slots for the test will be available. On the designated days and times when the Self-Access Center (Building 5, Room 104) is open, students can reserve a slot for the English test. New slots are released every two weeks. If you have not booked a slot in advance or arrive late for your appointment, you will not be admitted to the test session and will need to register for a new slot.
WHERE DOES THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEST TAKE PLACE?
The English language tests take place in the Self-Access Center (Building 5, Room 104). Please bring the following items to the test session:
- your student ID
- a photo ID (e.g., national ID card or passport)
- a certificate of enrollment (only for students in a German-language master’s program)
- your own laptop (with the Chrome or Microsoft Edge browser) and your own headphones
Important: If you do not have any of the browsers listed above, please download one before the test session.
HOW CAN I FIND OUT MY TEST RESULTS?
You will receive a detailed score report via email on the same day. You can find an example of this score report here.
HOW OFTEN CAN I RETAKE THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEST?
You may take the English language test no more than once per academic year.
The test result is valid exclusively for four years at Leuphana University Lüneburg.
