It’s More Fun Together – What Can You Expect at the Self-Access Center This Winter Semester?

2026-10-12

The Self-Access Center (SLZ) is a place where students can learn languages independently, collaboratively, and enjoyably  - as a supplement to regular language classes that is tailored to their own interests and learning goals. The diverse program offers numerous opportunities to speak, discover, practice, and learn languages together. In the 2026/27 winter semester, you can not only take language tests for placement and as proof of language proficiency for a study abroad program, but also take advantage of various self-study offerings to apply and deepen your language skills outside of regular language classes.

Those who prefer to learn languages in a social setting are warmly welcome at our language cafés. During the winter semester, language cafés will be offered for English (Intermediate), German as a Foreign Language, French, Spanish, and Italian. In a relaxed atmosphere, participants can speak without pressure to perform, learn new expressions, and improve their language skills by interacting with other students and a native-speaking tutor.

The themed evenings also invite participants to experience language differently; for example, the program includes a French film night featuring *En corps* (*Rise*, 2022). International students can also learn German idioms and discover their meanings creatively through “Sprache im Bild” (Language in Images). Spanish learners can practice irregular verbs playfully and actively during “¡Verbos en acción!” These themed evenings combine language learning with cultural and everyday topics, offering plenty of opportunities to participate and experiment.

For international students who want to improve their German skills, the guided study group “Grammatik im Gespräch” offers the chance to apply and reinforce everyday grammatical structures directly through conversation. This format, which was very popular last summer semester, combines group conversation with practical exploration of grammatical issues and provides a space to clarify uncertainties and learn from one another.

In addition, the SLZ helps language learners find language exchange partners. Anyone who wants to learn a language while also sharing their own native language can find a suitable language exchange partner here. By engaging in everydayinteraction, both parties can learn from each other and apply their language skills in authentic conversations.

Those who wish to plan and further develop their personal learning process in a more targeted way can also take advantage of the SLZ’s learning counseling services. In a one-on-one session with a qualified language learning counselor, you can reflect on your own learning goals, habits, and needs, and discuss appropriate learning strategies, materials, and opportunities.

All dates and further information regarding the Self-Access Center’s offerings will be announced here during the first week of classes.
